Kim Churchill Shatters Musical Myths.
Being a jaded musician as well as a web developer, it's not often that a performer comes along and blows my mind - in a good way that is.
Honestly, sometimes I think I'm am to hanging out musically, to what it's like to hang out with my friends in the film industry - who, when going to a movie with them will proceed to give away all of the secrets to how certain effects were done, and how much of it was poor quality and workmanship, completely shattering the myth and magic of being in a dark theatre, with my imagination sat upon by the singing fat lady of the cinematic insider.
I mean, I toured and played a lot of places for a long time - I've seen some genius, and some horrific idiocy, often at the same club. And as such, I like to give away the myth to make myself seem more worldly than I am. Music has much to do with the ego, so looking worldly is all in the job description.
So when I got a call from my friend Frank at Teamworks Management in Vancouver about developing a site for a new, young artist he was working with named Kim Churchill, I knew that chances were, this guy was probably going to be more genius than anything, and I was not proven wrong. Frank has a habit of working with great talent - Lowest of the Low, Xavier Rudd, Econoline Crush and Matthew Good to name a few - so I was pretty excited to work with him again on this project.
Kim Churchill is a prodigy - not only is he an insanely good guitar player and songwriter, he plays multiple instruments at the same time, live and without band accompanyment. Kick drum, tambourine, harmonica, vocals, guitar... along with a battery of foot pedals (with the exception of a sample loop pedal) his live show is astonishing. What makes me even more nuts about it is he's only twenty one years old.
Gah!
Delusions of my own flailing talent aside, he's awesome, talented, an amazing performer and one of the nicest guys you're ever going to meet. Any attempt by this "worldly" musician to put him on a lower peg for the sake of my own ego are countered internally by the fact that this sort of talent doesn't come along very often, so I should really silence my own mind, and sit back and enjoy everything I can about his music.
I recommend that you all do the same.
Cheers!
